Scam Victim Help: Your Partner in SCAM EDUCATION

What to Do if You’ve Been Scammed

Time is of the essence! Report your situation as soon as possible (this costs no money.)

1. Act Quickly

Scammers move money fast, so it’s important to report what happened as soon as possible. The quicker you report, the more likely authorities will be able to stop further harm.

2. Collect Any Information You Can

Before reporting the scam, try to gather any details about the scammer and the situation. This includes:

  • Screenshots of any conversations or emails.
  • Information about the payments you made (such as the amount and where you sent it).
  • If you can, write down the transaction number or other details related to the scam. These will help law enforcement understand exactly what happened.

3. Report to the FBI

Visit the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), a safe site where you can file a report. By doing this, you’re helping to track the scam and warn others. It’s easy to fill out and only takes a few minutes.

4. Report to Your Local Police

Don’t feel embarrassed or alone—reporting a scam is an important step to stop these criminals. When speaking to local law enforcement, ask to speak with someone who understands financial crimes. You may need to educate them a little, but remember, you’re doing the right thing.

5. Report to Operation Shamrock

You can also report the scam to Operation Shamrock’s CHAINABUSE portal. This helps connect your case with others and works to stop scammers from stealing more money. Operation Shamrock works with law enforcement to try to freeze stolen funds and help get them back.

Be Kind to Yourself

We understand that you might be feeling upset, confused, or even embarrassed right now, but please remember—you are not alone, and this wasn’t your fault. Take your time, and reach out to trusted friends, family, or a professional for support when you’re ready.

You’ve taken an important step by looking into how to report the scam. We’re here to help guide you through the process, every step of the way.
